Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad

posted in Personal

Monday December 5, 2011

Over 4 decades ago a handsome young Air Force soldier met, fell in love with and married a beautiful Taiwanese young woman.  Their playground was the streets of Taipei and Taichung and all parts in between.  listening to the stories of how my father would whisk my mom around town in his flashy little sports car and no matter where they were treated like royalty.  Entrance into all the crowded nightclubs, prime tables at any restaurant they wanted and so much more.  You see, at that moment in their lives, the movie Dr Zhivago had been playing and the people at these clubs, restaurants and even in the streets thought that my dad was OMAR SHARIF!!!  The lead actor in Dr. Zhivago.  Can you imagine that your doppelganger is in the height of his career and well, you can see why the royal treatment =)  Regardless, imagine that you are young, in love and having the time of your lives and able to create and share in these amazing moments.  This is their story… Quite often when I speak of my childhood I know that there may be people in my company that could question the authenticity of my escapades.  Only because I have had the opportunity to live a very colorful life.  Having been born in Taiwan and living their until I was 4 I was privy to many things because of my mother’s family.  I was a little princess in the eyes of my Grandfather and even though he spoke no English, communication was a non issue.  I spoke fluent Taiwanese ( as much as you can expect for a 4 year old) and my Father spoke conversational Taiwanese.  I am told that despite the language barrier between my Father and Grandfather they would talk for hours.  People around them thought they were crazy that they could not only understand each other but could carry on highly emphatic conversations filled with laughter and debate.  Before my Dad’s tour in Taiwan was over my Grandfather had a conversation with him that still holds so much weight.  My Grandfather made my Dad promise that he would love, provide for and honor my mother for always, no matter what!  Shortly after, we moved to Michigan.  This would be the first move in my life of many.  Growing up in a military family is very similar to being a gypsy.  Always moving.  A new place.  New people.  Never having roots but the experiences, ohhhhhh the experiences.  These experiences are a whole other blog post reserved for another time.  My mother chose my father and he chose her.  Then in the early 70’s, together they left Taiwan with me and my  brother.  Leaving everything she knew and her family, my mother made a new life with her growing family.  Through the years I have learned a lot from their relationship.  First, nothing is ever perfect.  There were tough times and there were celebrations.  Resilience as you grow older together and change is so important in sustaining a relationship.  If you want longevity then you must know that love is work.  You work at it every day.  You work hard if you want to keep it.  You don’t judge.  You support.  You stand by each other and like my father has repeated to me on more that a dozen occasions, you love each other NO MATTER WHAT.  No matter if you age, gain weight, lose weight, have poor fashion sense, bad eating habits, new hobbies, new friends, old friends, pressures with life, jobs, kids etc….  Life, much like love is what you make of it, what you put into it and the insight you gain from these experiences mold you and those around you.  So today on your anniversary, I wish you both many more decades of ups and downs and all the things that kept you together all of these years!  I love you both so very much I hope you are doing something today that helps you to remember the “why”.  Why you fell in love, why you married, why you raised three beautiful, amazingly talented, super smart, kids (it’s my blog, I can brag if I want to, hee hee)  Happy, Happy, Happy Anniversary !!!!!!

Krista – A time to heal…

posted in Lifestyle Portraits, Personal

Monday May 10, 2010

I was beyond flattered when my friend and fellow photographer Krista Valla asked to me help her create a photo shoot for the sole purpose of freeing herself from the pain and memories of her tragic  accident.  A personal struggle that she has come to terms with and is recently facing the demons of a day where twisted metal and concrete claimed her memory and a piece of her was lost. I can’t begin to imagine what it must feel like to have holes in your mind when conjuring up the simplest of recollections.  To think that something so much as how to utilize the basic tools of your trade to the most secret or powerful thoughts that lay deep in our subconscious only to be drawn forward when a sight or smell or some form of recognition triggers it.  I’m sure I could relearn what it feels like to smile when I feel a soft and warm salty sea breeze wafting through the air but relearning and remembering are two different things entirely.

I commend Krista’s strength and perseverance to get through that time and applaud her for being a fighter and pretty much laughing in the face of those demons. Sometimes we need to confront the issues that haunt us the most and in that confrontation a sliver of solace can be found.   She tells me that she has begun to remember some things, like holding a camera and seeing beauty through the lens again. While other memories still remain out of reach. Time, it heals and in time I hope that you Krista, can be made whole.

So, we trudge on a rainy day to a salvage yard…. Here we stare twisted metal in it’s face and we spit in it.  I hope that these images bring you some closure….

Thank you to Bethany from Gloss Salon for providing the  Hair styling- you’re vision was spot on!!!  The ever so talented Kristen Lober provided Make-up.

To all the Mama’s out there {personal}

Monday May 10, 2010

I was trying to clean up some of the files on my desktop and organize them onto external drives when I came across a folder that had some copy print work from years ago.  In that folder was one of the first images I have of me with my mom.  Although my hair looks very similar now to what it did in this image there is obviously a world of difference.  Decades have passed by and I’m now a woman with a daughter of my own so I can relate to the struggles as well as triumphs that my mother must have felt.  Several emotions wash over me as I look intently and recall slices of time spent growing up.  I admire my mother for the woman she was and for the woman that she is today.  She possesses  the type of strength and resolve to withstand anything that in her lifetime she has endured.  She is well loved by everyone who meets her and taught me to always be the bigger person.  She is as feisty as she is introspective.  Most of all she is the woman who has shaped me as a mother and in her nurturing ways I have found my own.  So Happy Mother’s day to my mom and all of the mama’s out there!!!!

Here I am in Taiwan, Probably thinking up my next to do list =)

Yup, even at an early age I could be found managing my staff from behind a desk.

Yeah, standing by a plant, didn’t we all?

It was the 80’s, don’t judge, Ha ha – we thought we were so cool and dressed cool too!

The Chestnut Club Shoot

posted in Personal

Tuesday January 12, 2010

The air is very crisp outside so the warmth indoors at The Chestnut Club is not only welcoming but also soothing.  It is always a blessing when you can shoot inside and know that as a photographer what awaits you is an aesthetic dream filled with beautiful light, rich textures, amazing detail and a canvas worthy of artistic creation.  Today I get to hang out with some of my friends and fellow photogs from our Philadelphia Wedding Photographer Group. I’m always excited when we get to share thoughts and techniques and get down to some nitty gritty shooting and vibe off of each other.  We are all different in terms of how we make our images or how we see light so it’s nice to be able to see things through their eyes.

Karen and Healy of The Chestnut Club looked ever so posh as they were found lounging and chatting on the corner sofa as I arrived! Their welcoming smiles and generosity exceeded any expectations that we had. Sometimes when dealing with venues and/or owners it can be a crazy kind of dance- ha, ha more like a battle with some fist pumps thrown in for good measure. Not all venues are appeasing to the thought process behind what we as photographers go through in creating visually stunning or provocative imagery. This is not the case with Karen and Healy. Working at The Chestnut Club was truly a delight.  Not only did we have full access to the furniture, lighting and such, we also had such beautiful elements to work with that are inherent of the design of the venue.  Gorgeous brick walls, interesting chandeliers and super cool furniture to name a few.  All of these things provided for the perfect artistic backdrop for our photo shoot.  We wanted to do a shoot that showcased a variety of lighting techniques that would be viable for when you are on the go, much like on a wedding day.  As a group we find that we are our best resources when it comes to learning and sharing and growing our skill sets.  We set out to challenge ourselves and for some of us it was to shoot in a manner that you are unaccustomed to.  Such as using artificial lighting or off camera flash or mixed light.  Thanks to Karen and Healy for helping to make our endeavor a huge success.

I love natural light and am very accustomed to shooting in it so today I told myself that I will not use natural light and pushed myself to shoot with a variety of other lighting techniques.  I’m really happy that so many of the images I made mirrored what I saw in my mind.  Fun and gratifying!  Here’s some faves, Enjoy!

Philadelphia Photog Shootout

posted in Personal

Tuesday January 12, 2010

Freezing and below freezing temperatures could not deter the enthusiasm of 30+ photographers from throughout the Delaware Valley and New York/New Jersey area.  Thanks to Rob Nicholson and Photog Shootout and an amazing crew of stylists who converged on the scene and set the stage for a Punk Rock Bridal Shoot.  I was more than happy to oblige when Rob asked me to lead a group and discuss some techniques relating to anything that I thought would be of value.  I am always very humbled when approached to do things of this nature.  I am never one to presume that I know so much about a topic that I can teach these morsels to aspiring photographers however one thing that I do know a lot about is what works for me.  Now, what works for me may not work for everyone and that’s okay because as artists we should all have our own vision and interpretation.  I chose to lead my group and focus on the connections that people have with each other and you, the photographer as well as your surroundings.  I am always compelled to delve into the laws of attraction that propels couples towards each other as well as the personalities that ultimately show through.  There was much learning, laughing, sharing and shooting and in the end I think that we all learned that even in the cold and dreary winter light we could make not only beautiful images but also connections with each other.  Here are some of my favorites from the day =)

The Make a Wish Portrait Special

…I'm not sure what happened first, the tear carving a slow and steady path down my cheek towards an already splatter marked corner of my desk or the realization that most of the places that these children who are suffering with life threatening illnesses were "wishing" to see, I had already seen.  A movie premier, a show, Disney, Hawaii, Jamaica…  The list goes on and on.  Moments like this snap me back into reality and it's hard to convey the humble feelings that I have and the overwhelming gratefulness towards charities.

That's why for this Holiday Season I am teaming up with my friends and fellow photographers Mark Gardner of Mark Gardner Photography and Nicole Polk of Nicole Polk Photography for our Make A Wish Portrait Promo!!!

Help Make a difference for a child in the Philadelphia/Susquehanna Valley area.
The Deal…. For the First 8 clients to contact either one of us and book a portrait/holiday/Baby /any reason session at the reduced rate of $250 you get ::::::Drum Roll ::::::

  • $250 includes – Session Fee
  • travel within the Greater Philadelphia Area and some parts of De, NJ
  • your names added to the list of donors
  • DVD of 25 high res images – with a usage release (use for gifts, holiday cards etc..)
  • online proofing and hosting for 90 days
  • 100% of the cost will be donated directly to The Make A Wish Foundation- Philadelphia/Susquehanna Valley Chapter
  • you may get one, two or even all 3 of us depending on availability

That's right folks!  100 percent donation baby!  I've done a ton of research on charities and I'm happy to say that this chapter of the Make a Wish foundation has received a 4 star ranking which is the highest that you can receive and they are among only 5% of the charities rated to receive this rating for 5 consecutive years.  The rating means a lot to me because it confirms that the charity exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its Cause.  A large portion of the funds collected actually go towards the cause they represent and that is huge!

So contact us now to book your session – limited availability

  • Cindy: Thanks to everyone who participated in the sessions and for your donations! (12.22.2009 02:43pm)

Puppy Spa Day {Personal}

posted in Personal

Saturday May 30, 2009

Baby and Lilli look like ragamuffins.  Actually, I have never seen a ragamuffin so maybe they don't look like one but they are in dire need of a good bath, teeth brushing, nail trim and haircut.  So off to the groomers we go!  They absolutely hate going to the groomer.  They are little and always get attention no matter where we go but they get really scared if I'm not the one trimming them up.  Unfortunately you can only give mommy bowl cuts number 1 and 2 so many times before you need a professional to do it.  Here are the before and afters =)

Lilll feels pretty much the same way about spa day before and after she went…

The phone rings and I look at who's calling, it's my momma.  "Cindy, what time do you want me and daddy to come over?"  Hmmm, well…  I am totally not a morning person.  Could it be because I quite frequently work until the wee hours of the morning and my "morning " starts around 10:30 – 11:00 am.  You betcha!  So I say how bout 12:00, that's safe.  I have an appointment to take my car in and then I'll be home in time to chill for a bit.

We do some grilling, celebrate my mom's recent birthday and I decide that duh, I should take some pictures.  Getting everyone outside to do this is a task in and of itself.  I'm screaming come on, the light is perfect…  We are losing the light, let's go!  Kristin has my dad sucked in to watching Donnie Darko parts one and two and a couch potatoing they are going.  I knew I should have fed them after I snapped a few.  Finally I wrangle everyone outside and the light was in fact perfect.  I decided to snap a few of my parents together.  I think they are so cute.  It's funny because they have this whole fake bicker at each other back and forth way of communication.  Underneath that facade is a beautiful relationship and after almost 40 years they still adore each other as much if not more than when they first met.  The sun is setting and we are all laughing because no one seems to want to cooperate with my line of direction – cuz you know I don't do this like 4-5 days a week all year long or anything.  Regardless,  I still think we got some keepers =)

Grand mother and grand daughter laughing at me!  I love it!

A few of Kristin to finish out the session.  I just love the way that the sun streaks and flares through the trees oh and of course my baby looks beautiful.
